What I Heard Today :: Word of the Day

What I Heard Today :: Word of the Day

A movie quote meets vocabulary builder continues here with one of my go-to favorites:

You’ve Got Mail.

While shopping at the farmer’s market shopgirl says to NY152:

“His address? No, no! He would never do anything that prosaic!”

:: {Prosaic} ::

/prōˈzāik/

adjective

1. Having the style or diction of prose; lacking poetic beauty.

2. Commonplace; unromantic.

What I Heard Today :: Feist

What I Heard Today :: Feist

Who doesn’t love a little bit of Feist?  Especially on a Monday morning.

Leslie Feist is a Canadian bad ass {ass :: a singer songwriter} who does her thing as a solo artist {1234 and the iPod} and as a band member {Broken Social Scene}.

Her vocals are like that of an angel.  A super hip angel.

Her beats are chill and dichotomous by being rooted in sexiness and innocence.

How Come You Never Go There by Feist

{preview from new album that is to be released in october}

Play that funky music white girl.  I will wait with much alacrity for those beats.

I studied English Literature at the University of Texas at Austin.  I am in love with words.

I studied Theater and Acting.  I am in love with films.

So this is a combination of the two.

A movie quote meets vocabulary builder, if you will.

From Runaway Bride:

“I’ve witnessed far more treacherous and nefarious exits than that.”

:: {Nefarious} ::

|niˈfe(ə)rēəs|
adjective
(typically of an action or activity) wicked or criminal

What I Heard Today :: The Tallest Man on Earth :: Weather of a Killing Kind

What I Heard Today :: The Tallest Man on Earth :: Weather of a Killing Kind

He makes you want to laugh and cry and feel absolute joy.  The Tallest Man on Earth has mastered the art of melting dichotomous emotions together and has earned the title of indie folk hero.

Ironically, The Tallest Swedish Man, Kristian Matsson, stands at five and a half feet tall {nice use of irony btw, Matsson, because you are a small dude…}. He is a master lyricist whose words encompass poetry and demonstrate his virtuoso nature.

What I love mostly about Matsson is the fact that English isn’t even his first language and he impressively plays and sings with an ardent dedication to the American roots sound.

Everyone that I have introduced him to immediately comments on the similarities between him and Bob Dylan, who is also known for emitting true emotion through his voice.

He has a way of transporting a listener to another time, another place, and another emotion.  That’s some talent of a particular killing kind.

What I Heard Today :: Arcade Fire :: Newly Adapted

What I Heard Today :: Arcade Fire :: Newly Adapted

For some, Arcade Fire is new. For others, they are like an old friend. Without a doubt, they had a monumental year this year…being known to the masses as “The Suburbs” {which is the name of their latest album, but people thought it was the band name…not vacuous, just uninformed, no judgement here}.

My favorite jam of theirs is Sprawl II for its catchy, synthesized sound. Today, I came across their newest version of this song {minus the synthesizer and The Cure feel}.  I am a fan of new arrangements; not only by other bands but especially by the original band themselves.

A new take on a rad song.  Amazing.

So, take a moment to sprawl out and enjoy…

What I Heard Today :: Bon Iver

What I Heard Today :: Bon Iver

Never since the Bee Gees first wooed us with falsetto have I been in love with such a high pitched voice coming out of a man {ok, Justin Timberlake can hit some high notes that rock me to the core, but it is not his main schtick}.

Furthermore, any one who knows me also knows that I am a sucker for a bearded, quasi-homeless-looking guy.  {Maybe it is the Alaskan in me meets the New Yorker in me?}

Enter Bon Iver.

Much like a “good winter,” {which is the play on words from the French saying: bon hiver} Justin Vernon’s sweet sounds make me smile, then cry, then laugh.

He takes you on an emotional journey through the conviction in his voice.  One of my favorites:

Bon Iver – The Park (Feist Cover)
